Colonel Murphy's Mansion House

Brief History

The building was built in the 1790's and originally was a tavern and stagecoach stopover on the old Cumberland Road. Col. J.H. Murphy owned the building in the 1850's. President James Buchana gave a speech on the front balcony in 1856. J.E.B. Stuart stopped by on his way to Gettysburg during the Civil War, and the building was part of the Underground Railroad.

Club History

It originally opened in 1992 as Col. Murphy's Saloon playing bands from all over the Mid-Atlantic region as well as from Boston, New York, West Virginia, and Utah. Some of the more well-known bands were: Great Train Robbery, Never Never, Solar Circus, Government Mule, and Grinch. In 1999, the tavern was recognized as one of the top 100 places in the U.S. to see live music by the Rolling Stone Magazine. After a 7 year break, Colonel Murphy's was renovated and started playing live music again in October 2009.

Club Philosophy

To provide a setting for folks to hear good live music focusing on classic and modern rock by local, regional, and occasionally a national band that they would normally not get a chance to hear.

Rentals

Col. Murphy's can be rented for weddings receptions and private parties. It holds up to 225 people. For more information, contact Mike at 717-328-5090.

For Sale
